Regence clarifies its coverage of contraceptive devices
You may have seen in the news that we have been fined by the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) for incorrectly denying coverage for the removal of contraceptive intrauterine devices (IUD).
We cover birth control as part of our standard benefits. However, we had originally determined that the removal of IUDs wasn't medically necessary. The OIC notified us last year that this interpretation was incorrect. Upon learning of this error, we immediately reprocessed all impacted past claims and implemented system changes to make sure that the mistake wouldn't be repeated and that removal of IUDs would be covered going forward.
Our members always have the ability to appeal any claim that they believe has been denied incorrectly. This includes a third-party external review when necessary. We support this process as it ensures that our members receive the benefits they're entitled to.
We're committed to keeping our members at the center of everything we do and strive always to provide them with the best possible service.
