11/17/2009   Local newsman receives 2009 Latino Hero Award from Regence

Regence BlueShield recently awarded Seattle TV and radio host Jaime Méndez its 2009 Latino Hero Award. The award is part of our ongoing commitment to the Latino community. It honors individuals of Latino descent who give back to the community and have impressive professional or educational accomplishments.

"Jaime Méndez has truly become a champion for Seattle's Latino community," said Francisco Garbayo, manager of Emerging Markets. "His commitment to connecting the community, especially recent immigrants, with the resources and services they need truly embodies the spirit of the Latino Hero Award."

A Columbia native, Mendez is the host of "Noticias Noroeste" on KUNS-TV and radio show "La Voz de Washington." In both capacities, Mendez focuses on providing his audience information they can use—from health tips and community resources to news from home.

"The Regence Latino Hero Award was created to honor Latinos making significant contributions to the community, and it is part of Regence's larger Latino outreach program focusing on health education, continued Garbayo. "At Regence we understand and honor the changing face of our communities."

As the recipient of the Hero Award, Mendez will receive $2,000, which he plans to donate to Casa Latina, a Seattle nonprofit connecting Latino immigrants with education and employment opportunities. He will also be featured in a Regence advertising campaign.
