01/27/2009   What is the real cost? New Regence Web site talks change

Health care costs continue to rise at an alarming rate, faster than the rate of inflation. With national expenditures on health care at over $2 trillion annually, reform is needed now.

Regence has made progress in the past two years on implementing cost and quality measures to benefit our members and the communities in which we live and do business. On Jan. 27, Regence launched a public awareness campaign designed to educate Regence members, providers, legislators and community leaders about the drivers of health care costs, the need for quality, and how every person's actions impact the health care system as a whole.

The campaign will launch first with an informational and interactive Web resource. This Web site, WhatsTheRealCost.org, is especially timely for legislators as they consider many proposals for extending health care access in the face of what President Obama called in his inaugural speech "health care that costs too much."

Gaming and more to come
Future phases of this educational campaign will include the launch of an online health care game, which will be housed on WhatsTheRealCost.org, among other Regence resources. The site will continue to develop in format, and this spring will encourage consumers to ask "What is the real cost?" of health care services they are receiving. We will advertise this effort throughout our region.

Look for more announcements in the coming months on this important educational effort.
