Newly launched Regence Foundation to strive for meaningful change in the health care system
We were proud to announce on April 14 the formal launch of our corporate foundation—The Regence Foundation—dedicated to transforming health care in the United States. The Regence Foundation estimates it will contribute $2.5 million in its first year and $4 million per year thereafter to organizations addressing its three funding priorities: health care access and quality, the use of technology to engage and educate health care consumers, and improvements to the way the health care system supports individuals and families during the end-of-life process.
These three funding areas are rich both in need and opportunity for improvement. With the goal of improving health care in the communities Regence serves, the Foundation will provide flexible, strategically placed funds to local organizations sharing that vision and commitment.
Regence believes that philanthropy is a powerful force for driving deep social change. To that end, the Foundation is looking forward to identifying and fostering creative, innovative ideas about how to fix our broken health care system.
In conjunction with its launch, the Foundation announced five employee-nominated inaugural grants of $10,000 each to organizations working to improve health care access and quality: Whatcom Alliance for Health Care Access in Bellingham, Washington; Inland Northwest Health Services in Spokane, Washington; the Coalition of Community Health Clinics in Portland, Oregon; Fourth Street Clinic in Salt Lake City, Utah; and Snake River Community Clinic in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Foundation is currently accepting grant applications from organizations that improve health care access and quality, and it will soon accept applications from organizations that transform health care through consumer engagement and technological innovation. Later this year, it will invite applications from organizations working to improve end-of-life issues.
The Foundation is chaired by Mike Alexander, who will work with other board officers and members to provide oversight and strategic direction for the Foundation's work: Kieren Porter, president; Kerry Barnett, secretary; Steve Hooker, treasurer; Jennifer Cannaday, Vivian Chi, Mark Ganz, Dr. Jeff Robertson and John Stellmon. The Foundation's executive director is Monique Barton.
