Move It gets lawmakers moving and schools winning
We have teamed up again with Washington legislative representatives for Move It, our annual walking challenge program. The program was developed to bring an awareness and action to the growing problem of obesity in America while adding a little friendly competition into the overall conversation about health.
The six-week program requires participants (Washington state legislators) to wear a Regence pedometer and record their weekly steps. Each participant's goal is to have the most recorded steps by the end of the six weeks. We recognize the top walkers by awarding money to schools in their districts. In this year's program, six state legislators—three representing eastern Washington and three representing western Washington—earned a combined total of $10,500:
First Place
We awarded $3,500 to Adams Elementary in Spokane in honor of Sen. Marr's (D-Spokane) first-place finish. The school will use the money toward a climbing wall.
Second Place
We awarded $2,500 to West View Elementary in Burlington in honor of Rep. Quall's (D-Mt. Vernon) second-place finish. The school will use the money for health-related books.
Third Place
We awarded $1,500 to Ardmore Elementary in Bellevue in honor of Sen. Tom's (D-Bellevue) third-place finish. The school will use the money toward track improvements.
Honorable Mention
In honor of Rep. Ahern's (R-Spokane) participation, $1,000 went to Westview Elementary in Spokane. The school will use the money for health-related projects.
Honorable Mention
In honor of Sen. Delvin's (R-Richland) participation, $1,000 went to Jefferson Elementary in Richland. The school will use the money toward playground improvements.
